Regents Physics

Physics is a course that offers useful and interesting insights into the world around us, and into ourselves.  Physics is everywhere – from the cars we drive to the sun above, from central heat to the waves in the ocean.  We will be examining many different topics in physics this year.  I’m really excited about this year and hope that you are also.

PHYSICS - WHAT YOU NEED

Each student is responsible for having the following items in class every day:

v      Pencils and pen – Most of your work will be done in pencil.  You will often be required to construct data tables, diagrams and graphs.  Using pencil allows you to make corrections should you make any errors.

v      Calculator – You MUST have a calculator.  You will use it a lot!!  It does not have to be fancy, a TI-30 or its equivalent will be sufficient.

v      3 Ring binder – you will need to record notes and keep handouts in the binder.

v      Reference table – I will provide you with a reference table at the beginning of the year that you must keep.

You will NOT be required to bring your textbook to class each day.  I will let you know when you need to bring your textbook to class.  I will have rulers and protractors in the classroom to be used in class; however, you may want to purchase your own to keep at your house to help complete your homework assignments.

PHYSICS - GRADING

Grading

Quarterly grades will be determined as follows:

          Tests, Formal lab reports               50%

          Quizzes, Labs                              30%

          Homework, Class Participation        20%

The final grade is calculated by averaging the four-quarter grades and the Regents Physics Exam grade.

Tests

Tests are given to allow students a chance to show mastery of certain topics.

Laboratories and Projects

Labs are an important part of any science class.  They are also a requirement for the Regents Exam.  Labs will be collected, graded and then kept on file in the classroom.  One lab in each quarter will be required to be written up as a formal lab report.
